Yep, it was noted in the CHANGES file:

* PID file directory is now created by the SysV/BSD daemon scripts.

However after successfully starting CouchDB, I don't see anything in that file.

It is now:

 /var/run/couchdb/couchdb.pid

This is taken care of by the SysV/BSD daemon scripts.
