Rene,

1. use replication to create a backup running an active-active working copy
of the database - it worked for me

2. I created the database on the other server before starting replication

3. continuous replication will survive reboots - replication occurs in real
time too therefore both the machines are always in sync

My setup

Master ---- replicated to Slave1 and Slave2

Slave1 is a desktop and slave2 is a laptop. Master is Linux and the slaves
are Macs.

Master has 11 million documents replicated to two machines.

The initial replication took a few days - and didn't have any issues. Been
running this setup for months now.
