The actual error is getting masked somewhere. Could you please enable DEBUG
logging, restart drill, re-run the query and post here any other error
message you see.

In $DRILL_HOME/conf/logback.xml, change

  <logger name="org.apache.drill" additivity="false">
    <level value="info" />
    <appender-ref ref="FILE" />
  </logger>

to

  <logger name="org.apache.drill" additivity="false">
    <level value="debug" />
    <appender-ref ref="FILE" />
  </logger>
