Which is the same proposal (build.gradle) I made right at the start --
but in a private email so there in no evidence in the mail logs :-)

The problem here must have been in the ~/.gradle/cache -- I tried with
TestNG 5.7 and it worked fine, I then deleted the ~/.gradle/cache and
TestNG 5.8 worked fine. So there appears to be a caching problem --
information in the cache is being believed even after changes in the
build.gradle file.
