I just blindly copied the user guide dependency line into my gradlefile, but my machine runs groovy 1.5.6 not 1.6-beta-1. Once I changed the dependency to v1.5.6, it worked. Actually it didn't, but I had a few problems with my plugin that I had to work out. Now everything is working.
