I actually wondered if it was Gradle slipping them in because it could.
It is potentially indicative that everything about my environment
screams Ant 1.7.1 with only Gradle using 1.7.0.

That is my fear.  If the classpath is not search strictly in appropriate
order, then uncontrollable problems can occur.
