I am probably not going to get the time in the next couple of days to
work on trying to reproduce the behaviour in a small example. So if
someone could branch the Gant mainline Bazaar branch (bzr branch
lp:gant) (*) and try the Gradle build that would be wonderful.

Yes and no.
I can still reliably reproduce the problem but I found that if I do the
build on my x86_64 laptop I can get a clean build and install. This is
now getting irritating since I cannot believe NFS is the issue! I need
to think about the experimentation needed to isolate the context that
causes the problem. THis will not happen in the next couple of days :-(
(*) You can checkout from the Subversion repository using Subversion if
you have to :-) but Bazaar is the official tool of Gant development. Of
course, Bazaar allows you to treat the Subversion repository as a place
to store Bazaar branches so you can use Bazaar direct from the
Subversion repository rather than using Launchpad.
