The snapshots from trunk are generally pretty reliable - we have a lot of integration tests which mean we don't break too much stuff. I think the main problem with using snapshots is keeping up with the breaking changes. Right now, we're currently tidying things up for a 0.9 RC release sometime in the next couple of weeks, so the APIs shouldn't change much (hopefully not at all) between now and the release. So now is not a bad time to try using a snapshot.
