would be great if you could post up an example build.gradle (just the stubs) 
and the lightest directory structure.

I can envision what you are doing here.. and i'm about to embark on a "Gradle 
Journey" with a 4 module enterprise app.. and i'm trying my best to get as many 
gotchas taken care of before I jump 2 feet in :)
