ad 1. All I can say is that javac can't find this class either (on Windows).
I don't know what is supposed to happen when you add rt.jar to the compile
classpath. It's already there and usually set with -bootclasspath.

ad 2. Have you tried the Gradle IDEA plugin (see user guide)?
