Usually, you check these things into version control, so you'd be mixing 
version controlled files and generated files under .gradle. This has all the 
usual problems of mixing generated and version controlled file: accidental 
check in of generated files, no easy way to clean, etc.

They default to living in gradle/ to keep build related artifacts grouped 
together outside of the top-level directory.
