I had used the first previously, but that then depends on the jar and
for some reason the jar is never up to date, it gets remade on every
build -- I must have a date or something in the manifest.

The second was clearly what I was after, I just went a Dir too far.

PS  The jsr166-mirror project is now up and running and snapshot
artefacts uploaded.  They have not yet been validated against Doug's
made with Ant but we're getting there.
