Brett, Check this http://gradle.1045684.n5.nabble.com/Exclude-transitive-dependency-in-buildscript-closure-td4306720.html#a4308181 thread . It looks like this might be a bug in Gradle. I opened a http://issues.gradle.org/browse/GRADLE-1478 ticket for this. As a workaround you can exclude transitive dependencies for the individual dependency.
