Are you talking about creating a War in Gradle, or in Eclipse? Have you created the Eclipse WTP project with Gradle or Eclipse? If it's the latter, have you changed any of the Eclipse defaults, in particular regarding build output directories? What's the full path to the WEB-INF/classes directory you mentioned?
