I tried that (well I had the common bits in gradle rather than
buildSrc/gradle) and whilst that works for build.gradle, it did not work
for buildSrc.gradle.  At least symbols ostensibly (using Groovy
thinking) put into the binding are not available in the
buildSrc/build.gradle whereas they do appear to be available in
build.gradle.

I just tried to create a minimal project to post, and it works just fine
in that.  So there is something specific to the situation I had tried it
previously that is failing.

Thanks for confirming I was actually going down the right road.

Back to investigation . . . 

. . . sometime later.  OK, the problem was spelling errors that I have
not spotted.  Now I feel embarrassed.  But at least it all works as
required.
