Hi howard,
at the moment there is no additional process dedicated to jettyrun started, so you have to the the system properties directly for your gradle process. the easiest way for this is modifying the gradlew/gradlew.bat file.

I would like to be able to set a JVM system property when executing
the jettyRun task; is there a way to do so?

This is for Tapestry; Tapestry does some bootstrapping of its
configuration from a JVM system property (this is how it knows whether
it is in development mode or production mode).
