Using the MySQL Connector/J JDBC driver (mysql-connector-java-5.1.47.jar in my case) did the trick! I had definitely tried the MySQL Connector/J driver for 8.x, but it would have taken me some time and frustration to think to try the 5.x version. Invaluable information. I will be looking forward to the MariaDB driver code being included in future versions (I am using Guac 1.1.0 sorry for not mentioning.)
