Going to Windows clients I found a different thing to make it work. After spending a bunch of time in the source files for the server, I found that the sound routines had been moved to different folders compared to the previous version. So it really was built correctly.
My fix was to uncheck the "enable audio in console" checkbox in the client connection settings (in the web interface).
