Not in my experience. I use [dig -x 10.1.2.3] to test if reverse resolving is working for host ip 10.1.2.3. Test on the box itself and on another box. Then [nslookup $hostname] works to check for forward resolution (ping works as well but gives less information about why it gives the answer it gives.
