Hadoop 0.20.1? I hope you're using a Hadoop version that's recommended by HBase (Apache hadoop-0.20-append branch / CDH3b4)
Is your ZooKeeper service running? You'll need to either let HBase run it for you, or run one yourself. On port 2181.
