Have you tried using double-quotes?
I would try split
"MY_TABLE,\x8D\xFD\xFA\xF0\x13\xB8\x1Fs\x934\xCC{h\x14\xE6I,1370020336667.faa7f7c8d63a9d2e04566c4a97090899."
and if that still does't work maybe try:
split 'MY_TABLE', "\x8D\xFD\xFA\xF0\x13\xB8\x1Fs\x934\xCC{h\x14\xE6I"
I'm suggesting this because I was dealing with splits last week and had to use
double-quotes although I don't have the exact command I ended up using (I also
had hex in my start key).
