I haven't done this, but I spoke w/ the MapR folks at re:Invent and they
said that if you choose the community-version of their MapRDB, it is
designed to be API-compatible with both 0.98 and 0.94.

The "community-version" is not a technical requirement, but avoids
additional costs.
