It's actually just an uncompressed UTF-8 text file.

This was essentially the create table clause:
CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE foo
ROW FORMAT DELIMITED
STORED AS TEXTFILE
LOCATION '/data/foo'

Using Hive 0.7.
