I tried running Hive 0.11 against CDH 4.3 successfully. I just
downloaded the tarball from the site and it worked so I'm afraid I
can't help you much because it sounds like your problem occurs much
earlier.

We ran into two issues later:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-4619 and
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-4003

The first we could only get around by recompiling Hive with the patch
and the second can be worked around by doing:

-- Workaround for https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-4003
SET yarn.resourcemanager.address="foobar";
