Generally if an upgrade needs to alter a table it will lock thr table. Its
best imho to schedule an outage.

Imagine if you corrupted table and lose a joined row. It might take 2 days
outage to fix. Better to just have a 10 m 1 hour outage and get the update
down with rhe fewest variables.
