Thanks for the tip. I'm happy to report that the 1.6 version is considerably more reliable than 1.5. Although I am still able to break it under/ high enough levels of contention it is a lot harder to do. Also, it generally recovers when the client is killed (as opposed to the whole cluster) - though I'm unsure as to the best way to monitor and kill clients if this were to happen in production.
