I believe I found my own answer here <https://stackoverflow.com/questions/40262584/why-am-i-getting-jdbcsqlexception-non-hex-characters-with-my-h2-database-spr> . After adding the referenced hibernate jar to my project, ignite SQL queries against VIN were not interpreted as hexadecimal strings.
