story navigator is not yet updated to 4.0:

Continue using 3.6.x for the moment if you want to use the navigator.

You are correct it was by design that the cycling story would timeout.
I did not expect the browser to remain open though.
I have the log4j dependency in my pom file and some reports are
created although I am using the story navigator and it seems the
xref.json is not populated correctly on a timeout as the navigator is
empty. Also any of the stories that were cancelled do not appear in
the reports but I would think this is expected.
