The issue has been resolved. Many thanks to all who posted their suggestions and gave me pointers to additional things I could learn.
The last post to this thread led me to switch off anything i could think of which could possibly be conflicting with the transfer of data and strangely enough disabling my AVG anti-virus real time protection finally solved the problem. Maybe worth noting is that i was running my jmeter and webserver on the same machine.
