That's not a valid reason in principle.
And it is not needed in practice either. For example, none of FreeBSD public
mailing lists require subscription -- yet spam is very rare. Automated tools
(spamassassin, etc.) let ham through, filter obvious spam out, and route the
edge-cases to a few human-moderators for review.
