Windows controller and Linux agent would work only after configuring (on each Linux) the "jmeter-server" file, as follows:
RMI_HOST_DEF="-Djava.rmi.server.hostname=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the Linux IP address, as seen by the Windows controller.
