Until the limitation is fixed you may try using third-party jmeter additions. There is a graph for active threads [ http://code.google.com/p/jmeter-plugins/wiki/ActiveThreadsOverTime ]. Also you may see active threads count in non-gui run with console status logger [ http://code.google.com/p/jmeter-plugins/wiki/ConsoleStatusLogger ]
