I also think you have to use JTA transactions. The Aries JPA layer we
use in Karaf relies on JTA to handle exceptions.

When I wrote my tutorial about JPA on OSGi I also started with non JTA
transactions as I used these in spring before but had a lot of problems
with them.
The spring guys always say that JTA transactions are complex but as long
as you stay in one process JTA is really simple.
