Hey William, If you plan to do a completely external "end-to-end" tests on Karaf [1] might be an option for you. Some colleges of mine and I are currently working on a framework where you can control Karaf completely externally. Although its currently under heavy development and the tests and wiki is just getting to life it might still be already of some use.
