No, I meant that the $karaf_home/data directory is empty. When I got those errors, at that time I was not trying to deploy my kar file at all. Just trying to get karaf build working on my machine.
When that didn't work, I changed my pom to be exactly as given in the custom-distribution documentation <http://karaf.apache.org/manual/latest/developers-guide/custom-distribution.html> After this the wrap: error was not there, but the command line still didn't respond.
