Ok, so I guess it is a temporary issue which will be fixed in the release, 
correct?

Did you have time to take a look at the logs are figure out what makes Karaf 
freeze?

In Karaf 3.0.1, in the system repo, you have region with the artifact that you 
are looking for:

system/org/eclipse/equinox/region/1.0.0.v20110506

That's why smx-m2 repo is not required.

In your case, I suspect that the system repo doesn't contain the region 
artifact, and so it tries to resolve the artifact remotely. As this artifact 
(in this version) is only available on smx-m2 repo, you need the repo.
