I figured it out. My application uses Apache MINA Serial Transport 2.0.1 to connect to serial devices. Karaf 2.4.2 has a newer version of MINA (2.0.7) which doesn't play well with the older Apache MINA Serial Transport. After upgrading MINA Serial Transport to 2.0.7 I can connect to my serial devices again.
