Hi Bruce. I'm no expert with lenya/cocoon as I started working with them just a couple of weeks ago.. but here's my advice:

I have been roped in to upgrading a website for a small non-profit ski club I am involved in, who currently have a static site which is not particularly suitable or simple to update for those involved in the day-to-day running of the organization. I have enough knowledge about things such as websites to be asked, but am not a professional in computer/web design. Ideally, I'd set up the basic structure of the site, and the members (sometimes me, sometimes others (if I'm lucky)) would take over from there to maintain content. I looked at the low/no budget CMS options, and Lenya seems to fit the bill, allowing pretty much complete control over the layout, while still allowing site owners to easily adjust content. Lenya looks great, but there are three questions I have that I hope others on this list might be able to offer some advice on: 1. Hosting. Cheap hosting. This will be a very low-traffic site, even if successful beyond our wildest imagination in attracting new members, as the appeal of the club is very local. Obviously, the location of the host isn't that important for technical reasons, but for political reasons it would be nice to host with someone local; the club is located in Ontario, Canada. So: Q: What are the technical requirements to host a Lenya site? What do I need to ask prospective ISPs? What fills in the blank: "Do you support sites that require ________________?"
Lenya is based on java/a servlet container/cocoon Although there are many more hosting companies that host sites based on other technologies (php, asp, etc..) there are now many that also host sites based on java. Don't know about Canada, though.. The servlet container may be any.. just name it: tomcat, jetty, etc..
I haven't managed to find specific info about hosting requirements in the documentation. 2. Photo Gallery. There are lots of options out there. What photo gallery would integrate best with Lenya? Gallery? JGallery? Does it matter?
I would set up the photo gallery using cocoon.
3. Events Calendar. Has anyone set up a calendar for use with Lenya? Any recommendations?
I'd set up the calendar as a separate thing..
