For information about xsl:choose, see e.g. http://www.ibiblio.org/xml/books/bible2/chapters/ch17.html#d1e9006 But since you want to display the borders only in the editor, I think you won't need to write any xsl code, you can do it with css. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Kupu, I've never used it. Sorry if that's not much help...
