I want to protect via login/pwd a part of my live site. The default policy
managers concat the rules of the subtrees (InheritingPolicyManager), so as my
site root is accessible to anyone, I can't manage to restrict just a subtree of

No, it's much simpler... All you have to do is to create a new directory
in the
/lenya/pubs/default/config/ac/policies/live
and put a subtree-policy.acml file with containint somewhat like:
<policy xmlns="http://apache.org/cocoon/lenya/ac/1.0";>
<group id = "the_group_you_want_to_have_access_to_this_part">
<role id="visit"/>
</group>
</policy>
