It's simple enough to transform the given XML into XHTML.  Does it
matter if I use the strict or transitional DTD?

I would say: first, you have to decide whether you want to define a
resource type:
http://lenya.apache.org/1_2_x/how-to/custom_resourcetype.html

or, if you want to transform your XML files to XHTML (e.g. by running a
script), before moving them into Lenya
