Now I know, I can look in navigation.xmap for the parameters
available for menu.xsl - the parameters set there will be fine for
the xslt inside my menu.xsl.

That's not possible without patching the core.
You can enable fallback for navigation.xmap in global-sitemap.xmap
and supply your own navigation.xmap, or you can add the parameter
to navigation.xmap directly.
