#14: Specify the semantic of relationship types

Changeset [66] introduced dynamically extensible relationship types. The
semantics of this functionality is neither defined nor documented. What's
worse is that I think there are corner cases we can't handle well and a
few other subtle drawbacks to this API. Maybe the API needs to be
rethought, as pointed out in [66]. In either case, figure it out and
document it.
