Andy,
Mylar feature for Maven is optional, but when you choose it it will
require particular Mylar to be installed before hand or at the same time.
You can certainly complain to the Eclipse platform (i.e. fill in an
issue in their bugzilla) and Update Manager component in particular to
make it more seamless. :-)

Eugene

when updating, I get the foollowing error:
Maven Integration for Mylar (0.0.11.20070304-1200) requires plug-in
"org.eclipse.mylar.tasks.ui (2.0.0.v20070221-0830)", or later version.
shouldn't the update system get any dependecies like this
automagically?

You can instal latest dev build from a separate update site at
http://m2eclipse.codehaus.org/update-dev/
For this version please report issues under "dev" version in JIRA.
The
current plan is to have more frequent dev builds and promote stable
ones
into the stable releases.
Besides bug fixes (including issues with settings and
extensions/plugins configuration) and new Maven Embedder, the most
notable features are:
-- Importing local Maven projects
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/M2ECLIPSE/Importing+local+Maven+projects
-- Mylar integration
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/M2ECLIPSE/Integration+with+Mylar
You can see full list of resolved issues in JIRA

regards,
Eugene
