What Eclipse version you call "latest and greatest"?
E.g. I installed m2eclipse from the dev update site.
Eclipse gave me the following error and refused to install m2eclipse:
Cannot find a solution satisfying the following requirements
org.eclipse.equinox.security [1.0.100.v20080722-0430]
Most probably you have to unselect optional m2eclipse components that
are not applicable to your Eclipse installation. For instance, you can't
install AJDT, WTP or Subclipse support for Maven if corresponding
Eclipse tools are not installed.
Apparently p2 is not smart enough to tell you that and error reported
in the update ui does not reflect the real issue. I recommend to submit
a bug about this at
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/enter_bug.cgi?product=Equinox
regards,
Eugene
PS: There is an issue reported against Eclipse 3.5, but we haven't
looked at it yet, please vote on it if you would like to see it fixed
