Joseph did you see some threads on this topic on [email protected] recently? I recall people summarized what they know about users in the field.
The bad news is most of the usage I (we) seem to know about aren't cleared to be talked about publicly. It seems like 2/3 of the time the work is done by a third party for a company, and the third party is fine to talk about it and all that, but isn't bothered to request permission from their client to clear it. So for no really good reason it's "secret". You can figure some of the usage by looking at this list, to an extent. Grant turned up a statistic recently which he posted on this list which suggests 14% of Hadoop users say they're using Mahout, but it's hard to really interpret that.
