It would probably help if I had given the class name correctly: IDRescorer. It's covered in page 79-82 of the book.
It is quite simple, yes. I think the javadoc says about all you'd want to know. isFiltered() says whether an item should be excluded. rescore() lets you change an estimated pref or return NaN to (also) exclude it.
