Hi David, I would like to move this conversation to the mailing list so that others can help you figure out how you might use Mahout, or what other/additional technologies you may need to address your business problem. Please route subsequent email to [email protected] and I and others will respond as soon as possible. Jeff On 7/20/12 4:47 PM, David Rose wrote: Jeff,
I have already downloaded everything necessary for Eclipse and my colleagues use and know a little bit about Eclipse as well so I would prefer to use it if possible. I have not installed Mahout or Hadoop yet so I have not started generating the machine learning problems. We trade bonds and stocks here, and one of our stock traders wanted me to figure out a way to use the program so we can use it as a search engine accurate, relevant information on companies or industries we may be trading at any current time.

Hi David,
If you are just getting started with an IDE, I'd recommend using the free IntelliJ IDE over Eclipse for Mahout. It is the primary platform that most Mahout developers use and it has better support for Maven, which we use. If you are committed to Eclipse, let me know and I can help a bit more but it is not the easiest path.
What kinds of machine learning does your company wish to implement? Can you say a little bit about the problems you are trying to solve? Its a big field.

Hi Jeff,
I bought the online book "Mahout in Action" and have been reading through it, trying to follow along with the steps when possible. I am new to this whole process, including writing code in general. I have now download the latest Mahout, the latest Maven, and the Eclipse IDE. I am trying to install Mahout using the Eclipse IDE but I have no idea how to do so, and all the write ups I am finding when I google my question have not helped. I know this is probably a basic question for me to be asking but as I said, I have no idea how to do this kind of stuff.

Hi David,
As a first step, I'd recommend buying and reading "Mahout in Action" to familiarize yourself with the technologies provided. Once you have an idea of the kinds of algorithms you want to use in your new job, then joining the [email protected] mailing list would be the next step. There you can ask questions and get assistance from other users and from the developers too.

Hi, my name is David Rose, and I work for a broker-dealer firm in New York City. I have been given the project of learning about Mahout so we can implement it here. I am not sure how or where to get started and was hoping you could point me in the right direction. This is not my area of expertise so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
David Rose
