A good recommender shouldn't have a whole lot of popular items.

If your recommend does recommend lots of popular items, you might take a
look at the following:

a) are you using implicit feedback?

b) do you have enough data?

c) are you using a good recommender such as a log-likelihood sparsifier?

d) is this occurring on your test users?  For them, the items that are in
the test script may be common items and may be good recommendations for
those users.
