what are the settings in /etc/my.cnf 

they should be something like this, 

[client]
....
socket          = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

[mysqld]
....
socket          = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock 
......

note the matching values - we found a redhat didnt have the my.cnf and was
trying all over the place for sockets..
